The Abondance valley is the perfect setting for rambles and hikes of all levels. It is the starting point for many marked trails for families or more sporty types, you can discover the nature reserves and incredible viewpoints from the Mont de Grange or the Cornettes de Bise (2432 metres high). Take the GR5 that goes via the Chalets de Bise. La Pointe d’Autigny reveals an exceptional panoramic view across the Abondance valley, Mont Blanc, and Lake Léman.

    Family Walks

    The Village Loop

    In 1h30, visit the centre and its surrounding area with a stunning panoramic view across the Abbey and village. Free itinerary available at the Abondance Tourist Office.

    Chapels and Oratories Loop

    Start at Lake Plagnes. 159m elevation gain. During this gentle stroll discover several chapels and oratories that lay testament to the popular fervor the inhabitants had with their patron saints. Please note: this loop has 159 metres of elevation gain.

    Path Along the River Dranse: from Abondance to Châtel

    Start at Abondance village centre. This very easy and pleasant stroll follows the River Dranse, and you can walk or cycle it. You will discover the local heritage and surrounding landscapes.

    Please note that there is 300m elevation gain on this walk but it is nevertheless accessible to pushchairs.

    Remember to use the Columbus intercommunal shuttle bus, €1.50 per trip, if you do not want to walk out and back.

    Geopark Chablais

    In addition to its exceptional location between the shores of Lake Léman to the peaks of the Portes du Soleil, Chablais possesses a world renowned geological heritage.

    This heritage is at the origins of the extraordinary diversity of its riches: breathtaking landscapes, iconic cultural sites, world renowned mineral water, traditions and Alpine gastronomy.

    More than twenty unmissable sites reveal Chablais’ uniqueness, and are registered in the UNESCO Global Geopark Network. Easy access and suitable for young and old, both a playground and a place for quiet contemplation. The free discovery map is available at the Abondance Tourist Office.

    For example, the Lake Plagnes in Abondance is a registered Geopark site. There are free discovery outings available from May to September, the full programme and registration is available at the Abondance Tourist Office.

    Geocaching

    Geocaching, Val d’Abondance Treasure Hunt

    Free and organised by Les montagnards 74 and valdabondance.com.

    15th July to 15th August, alone or families, use your Smartphone and the GPS coordinates to find the 150 geocaches spread out all over the Abondance valley (Abondance – La Chapelle d’Abondance – Châtel – Vacheresse – Bonnevaux).

    How to take part:

    • Registration on geocaching.com if you do not already have an account.
    • Go onto the competition Internet site to find the caches’ GPS coordinates.
    • Search for the caches.
    • Write your passage in the logbook (=Logbook) that is in the cache.
    • Save (=Save) the discovered caches on geocaching.com.

    By taking part you have the chance to win prizes! The list of winners will be published on the Internet site and a prizegiving ceremony will take place in the autumn.

Abondance Valley Bureau des Guides

Bringing together mountain leaders and high-mountain guides, the Abondance Valley Bureau des Guides provides hikes for all levels: school groups, adult groups, seminars, individuals, etc. There are diverse hiking themes and levels including, fauna, flora, geology, yoga hiking, Nordic walking, heritage walks, treks, summits, and much more. Each week in July-August there is a special hiking programme available at the Abondance Tourist Office.
